Organization: NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia (a state affiliate of NARAL Pro-Choice America) is dedicated to building and sustaining a constituency that uses the political process to guarantee reproductive freedom for all women, including family planning, sexuality education, maternal health care, and safe, legal abortion. NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia is a grassroots 501(c)(4) organization, with a 501(c)(3) Foundation arm and a Political Action Committee.
Position: The Spring 2013 Advocacy and Communications Intern will work closely with the Advocacy and Communications Manager to execute field, political, and advocacy campaigns, as well as on efforts to communicate with our membership, the public, and the press. The position will be responsible for assisting in internal and external communications with members, activists, volunteers and the media.
The intern will gain skills and experience necessary for working in communications for a non-profit organization, as well as knowledge of pro-choice messaging, advocacy, and activism. The intern will assist the staff in communicating with NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia's members and activists through our website, blog, email listserv, and social media platforms. In addition to advocacy and communications tasks, the intern will have opportunities to contribute to NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia's program work to support pro-choice education, awareness and activism across the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The ideal candidate for this internship is a current student or recent graduate with dedication to pro-choice values and a basic knowledge of reproductive justice issues; interest in learning about the communications and development workings of a non-profit advocacy organization; political savvy and knowledge; professional demeanor; very strong written/oral communication skills and attention to detail.
Internship details/requirements: The ideal candidate will be available at least 10-15 hours/week for a period of at least 8-10 weeks sometime between January and May (spring semester). The position is unpaid, but provides a monthly transportation stipend and the option of receiving academic credit with the intern's college or university if applicable. The majority of internship activities will take place at our office in downtown Washington, DC (Metrorail and Metrobus accessible) during office hours (9am-5pm, Mon-Fri), but options for doing some work remotely are also available. There will also be opportunities to participate in additional organizational events and activities on evenings and weekends, though these are not required.
Intern Activities:
Social Media/Website
- Regularly write and update content on website, blog and social media platforms to keep membership informed on current work and action opportunities.
- Brainstorm new ideas to expand social media, blog and website activities and effectiveness and to track social media goals and progress.
Communications
- Monitor statewide media on a daily basis for relevant news stories; gather and record news clips; maintain media tracking sheet.
- Help respond to or publicize breaking news through social media and press/blogger outreach.
- Help draft sample letters to the editor and op-ed pieces for activists or for personal submission.
- Recruit, train, and mobilize volunteers to participate in grassroots campaigns and advocacy initiatives.
- Develop phone and canvass scripts, call and walk lists and other canvassing materials as necessary.
- Maintain and update tracking sheet for target legislators in preparation for 2013 statewide elections.
- Research and track relevant legislation throughout 2013 General Assembly session.
Administration/Other
- Help with various office activities, such as filing, data entry, mailings, as necessary.
Desired Qualifications:
- Support and enthusiasm for NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia's mission to defend and expand the full range of reproductive rights and health care options for women, including abortion, birth control, sex education, bearing healthy children, and adoption. Knowledge of current reproductive rights issues and experience with pro-choice or reproductive justice activism is preferred.
- Strong writer, researcher and editor familiar with Microsoft Office and social media applications. Experience with website/blog management, desktop publishing, image editing, or other computer skills are a plus.
- Familiarity with progressive online activism, blogging and social media practices.
- Activist, political, and/or non-profit experience. (Experience with non-profit or political communications is a plus.)
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills and a professional demeanor.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to work well both independently and in cooperative decision-making settings.

The position will be responsible for assisting in internal communications with members, donors, and major contributors.

This internship is also a great opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of pro-choice messaging,advocacy, and activism. The intern will be partially responsible for communicating with NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia’s members and activists through our website, blog, and social media platforms. In addition to development tasks, the intern will have opportunities to contribute to NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia’s program work to support pro-choice education, awareness and policy across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

- Assist with management of major donor campaign and help maintain donor relationships.
- Work with the Development Manager to identify and research donor and foundation prospects.
- Participate in the creation and execution of direct mail program, online fundraising and other membership development efforts.
Social Media
- Write and update content on website, blog and social media platforms to keep membership informed on current work and encourage contributions.
- Brainstorm new ideas to expand social media activities and reach development goals.
- Assist in the planning and execution of house parties,happy hours and other special events to engage members and raise funds.
- Assist with processing gifts and thanking donors.
- Various office administrative activities as necessary, such as filing, donor database management and other organizational tasks.

Position: 2013 is a huge election year for Virginia - particularly for reproductive rights. On November 5th, Virginians will go to the polls to elect a new Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General, as well as 100 members of the House of Delegates. To ensure that we elect pro-choice individuals to these critical positions, NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia PAC will be working throughout the year to support & protect candidates who will ensure the protection and promotion of reproductive rights policies in Virginia.
The ideal candidate for this internship is a current student or recent graduate with: dedication to pro-choice values and a basic knowledge of reproductive justice issues; experience in political campaign and/or grassroots advocacy work; political savvy and knowledge; professional demeanor; very strong written/oral communication skills and attention to detail.
Internship details/requirements: The ideal candidate will be available at least 30-35 hours/week for a period of at least 8-10 weeks sometime between May and August (summer). The position is unpaid, but provides a monthly transportation stipend and the option of receiving academic credit with the intern's college or university, if applicable. The majority of internship activities will take place at our office in downtown Washington, DC (Metrorail and Metrobus accessible) during office hours (9am-5pm, Mon-Fri), but interns must have regular weekend and evening availability for campaign and/or canvassing events, when needed. Access to a car is highly recommended, but not required.Intern Activities:
Candidate Research
- Maintain and update tracking sheet for all statewide candidates.
- Research reproductive choice views and positions of each candidate.
Grassroots Campaign Management
- Recruit, train and mobilize volunteers to participate in grassroots campaign, specifically working with endorsed candidates.
- Develop phone and canvass scripts, call and walk lists and other canvassing materials as necessary.
- Supervise weekly phone banks and ensure that established contact goals are met by project deadline.
- Oversee weekend door-to-door canvassing activities and ensure that established contact goals are met by project deadline.
- Monitor and respond to press items as necessary.
- Monitor and update organization's website, blog, Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Public Education Materials Development
- Assist in the creation of educational materials for statewide distribution.
- Develop website and social media campaign to complement field work.
Administrative
- Track progress toward established project goals and prepare weekly reports for political and communications manager.
- Perform other duties as necessary and assigned.
