Meet the Staff

Tarina Keene, Executive Director

Tarina's passions are politics, women's issues and reproductive rights. Becoming the executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia is the culmination of a lifetime goal to merge her passion and her career. Growing up in the coalfields of Virginia, she understands how poverty and disparity in healthcare especially affect women. She is committed to rectifying this inequity through NPCV’s work to ensure that the women of Virginia have access to reproductive healthcare, family planning and abortion no matter where they live in the state or their socioeconomic status.

Tarina served as Virginia NOW President from 2004-2006. She also served as Legislative Vice President from 2006-2008. She is a 2006 graduate of UVA’s Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership and has also worked as an advocate for animals and the environment. Some of her most proud accomplishments are helping to organize nearly 500 people from Hampton Roads to attend the 2004 March for Women's Lives, as a key organizer for the 2007 Running to Win: A Female Candidate Training, and establishing the Virginia NOW Legislative Task Force.

Tarina has a B.A. in Media Studies and B.A. in Political Science from Radford University and a Master’s of Public Administration from Old Dominion University. Currently, she resides in Alexandria with her husband Jason and three cats.

Joseph Richards, Programs & Communications Manager
Joey joins NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia after working in the reproductive rights movement in Utah for the past three years. During his time in Utah, he worked with campus interns, volunteers, media, and field campaigns, including a campaign to bring comprehensive sex education to Utah schools. Originally from Georgia, Joey earned his B.A. in Rhetoric from Georgia College & State University and his M.A. in Communication from Colorado State University (where he also earned a certificate in Women's Studies).

Caroline O'Shea, Development Manager
Caroline joins NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia following two years with a development consulting firm serving progressive political organizations. She earned a BA in government from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, where she was a leader in campus activism on political and social justice issues. Since college, Caroline has continued her involvement with women's issues and reproductive justice activism, including as a member of the Younger Women's Task Force: DC Metro Chapter executive board.

Amber, Political and Policy Intern
Amber is a 2009 graduate of the University of Virginia where she studied Government and American Politics. As a student, she served as president of the pro-choice student group and as a Campus Outreach Intern for Planned Parenthood. After graduating, she got a job as the Business Manager of Capitol Hill Cookie Diet, but wanted to continue her work in pro-choice activism. She is excited to have the opportunity to use her passion for politics and reproductive freedom to work with NPCV! Amber has been working with NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia for the past six months, helping with the crisis pregnancy center report, political organizing, and research.
