Thank Governor Kaine for cutting failed abstinence only programs
Governor Tim Kaine recently cut off funding for abstinence-only programs in Virginia's public schools. The move makes Virginia the 14th state to reject the failed abstinence-only programs backed by George W. Bush. Governor Kaine's action is a victory for teens' health. In April 2007, a study of federal abstinence-only-until-marriage programs concluded that abstinence-only classes neither delay the onset of sexual activity in young people nor reduce the number of partners of those who are sexually active. The United States has unacceptably high rates of teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and HIV/AIDS infections. Young people deserve honest, age-appropriate, and medically accurate sex ed that promotes abstinence and provides them with the information they need to protect themselves.
