2017 Endorsement: Justin Fairfax for Lieutenant Governor

In 2013, NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia worked to elect Terry McAuliffe for governor, Ralph Northam for lieutenant governor, and Mark Herring for attorney general because we knew a pro-choice executive branch was the only way to halt increasingly extreme attacks on our access to reproductive health care in Virginia. Over the past four years, we’ve seen the importance of having a progressive, pro-choice trio protecting women's health in Richmond - including a strong lieutenant governor to lead the state Senate.

That is why NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia is proud to endorse Justin Fairfax for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia in 2017. Justin Fairfax has the dedication, determination, and understanding it takes to help defeat the anti-choice majority and expand access to reproductive services for the women of Virginia.

Background

Justin grew up in an inner-city DC neighborhood that he watched transform under the pressures of drug addiction, violence, and few economic opportunities. Despite the forces working against them, Justin’s mom worked hard to put all four of her children through college. Justin earned a scholarship to Duke University, where he pursued a degree in Public Policy, and later attended Columbia Law School, where he was selected as a member of the Columbia Law Review.

Justin went on to serve as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. He also served as the Deputy Coordinator of the Northern Virginia Human Trafficking Task Force. Working with law enforcement, Justin saw firsthand the importance of criminal justice reform to keeping communities safe and functioning. He serves as the Vice-Chair of the Planned Parenthood Metropolitan Action Fund and earned a 100 percent score on his NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia Candidate Questionnaire.

Justin previously ran for Attorney General in 2013. Though defeated, he garnered 48 percent of the primary vote and was endorsed by The Washington Post. In 2014, Justin served as the co-chair of Senator Mark Warner’s successful re-election campaign.

Justin is the proud father of two children, Cameron and Carys, and owns a small business with his wife, Dr. Cerina Fairfax, DDS.

Defeating Jill Vogel

Justin’s opponent, state Senator Jill Vogel, has made no secret of her vehemently anti-choice record. Over the course of her ten years in the state Senate, Vogel has repeatedly introduced, supported, and voted for bills to limit access to abortion and the full range of reproductive health care. Among her greatest hits:

  • In 2012, Sen. Vogel personally introduced the infamous mandatory transvaginal ultrasound bill – a proposal so invasive and horrifying that it electrified Virginia and was roundly criticized by Rachel Maddow, Saturday Night Live, and The Daily Show with John Stewart, among others.
    •  Five years later, women in Virginia must still undergo a medically-unnecessary mandatory ultrasound and wait 24 hours before obtaining an abortion.
  • Years before Governor Bob McDonnell and anti-choice legislatures passed the targeted regulations on abortion providers (TRAP) which we’ve spent six years working to repeal, Vogel introduced an identical bill forcing medically-unnecessary targeted regulations on abortion providers designed with the intention of forcing those clinics to close their doors. While that bill failed, it served as a predecessor for the TRAP laws that still plague Virginia.
  • Vogel has cast over two dozen votes against women’s reproductive health and abortion access during her time in the state Senate.

NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia Scorecard Rating and Endorsements

While Justin Fairfax received a perfect 100% on NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia’s Candidate Choice Questionnaire, Jill Vogel has consistently received a 0% on our annual scorecard during her time in the state Senate.

*This year, we were proud to help pass the first proactive birth control bill to make it into law in over a decade here in Virginia – a measure to allow women to pick up a full year’s supply of birth control at one time, when prescribed by her physician. After voting against the bill in the past, Senator Vogel finally made the commonsense decision to support the bill this year. This vote earned her a 50% on our 2017 scorecard, but fails to erase her long history of working against reproductive health and access.

A Better Vision for Virginia

"I was raised by a strong woman, I am married to a strong woman, and I am raising a strong woman. As a proud feminist and the Vice-Chair of Planned Parenthood Metropolitan Washington Action Fund, I know that when women are empowered, our communities are stronger,” said Justin Fairfax. "And I pledge to continue to fight until all women’s rights are guaranteed.”

Justin understands the economic and health challenges women and families face in Virginia and he will take the gavel from Ralph Northam to continue being the progressive leader Virginia needs. Virginia’s General Assembly is squarely in the hands of anti-choice legislators. And with such a dangerous anti-choice candidate running against him, it is crucial that we stand up for reproductive rights by electing Justin Fairfax as a tireless voice for the women and families of Virginia.

In our current political climate, under the Trump-Pence Administration and with the Virginia General Assembly in the hands of anti-choice legislators, we know Justin Fairfax will be a champion for the rights of Virginians to access the health care they need and deserve. NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia encourages you to vote for our full panel of pro-choice "brick walls”: Ralph Northam for Governor, Justin Fairfax for Lieutenant Governor, and Mark Herring for Attorney General.
