Apply for our Student Advocacy Fellowship!
NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia believes in the power of student voices. That's why we're investing in the next generation of pro-choice leaders, giving them the knowledge & skills they need to become change-agents on campus and in the Commonwealth!
Fervently anti-choice politicians hold the majority in Richmond and they’re determined to deny Virginians our constitutional right to make our own reproductive healthcare decisions by stripping away access through sham laws and regulations. Virginia still has sham TRAP laws on the books, one abortion clinic for every three crisis pregnancy centers, and so much more. Since 2010, Virginia legislators have introduced more than 80 anti-choice bills!
But we’re fighting back: in 2017 alone, Virginia passed its first pro-choice law in over a decade to expand birth control access; the Board of Health amended TRAP to keep our clinics open; and we’re working to elect another governor who will be a steadfast brick wall against any attacks on reproductive rights.
The battle is here, and progress will be made here, at the state level. That’s why we’re investing in the next generation of leaders to rise up on college campuses across the Commonwealth.
EDUCATE: We keep Virginia’s public, policymakers, and media awake and aware.
ADVOCATE: We’re the voice of pro-choice Virginians and we lobby hard to make our voices heard in the General Assembly.
ORGANIZE: We’re building a thousands-strong network across the Commonwealth ready to take action, growing every day.
ELECT: We change the balance of power by electing lawmakers who share our values—and raise the alarm on those who don’t.
Why this Fellowship: NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia is offering an exclusive, yearlong fellowship opportunity to driven, passionate students ready to join the ranks of Virginia’s pro-choice champions. Our program develops a cohort of next-generation leaders ready with the skills and support they need to make change on their campus in Virginia.
The Student Advocacy Fellowship works with students through the fall, winter break, and spring semesters to develop their advocacy and leadership through a series of eight course modules with the ongoing mentorship of our Community Organizers. Our fellows tap into the knowledge and resources only those on the frontlines can bring—we work with guest speakers, activists, policy makers, and grassroots organizations to share their unique expertise. Students complete on-campus organizing activities to apply what they’ve learned, with the skills of each module building on the next. Modules include:
- Grassroots Organizing & Coalition Building
- Storytelling & Messaging
- Elections & Campaigns
- Reproductive Justice, Intersectionality & Special Populations
- Policy for Progressive Change
- Media & Press
As their capstone project, our fellows develop and execute an advocacy campaign of their very own to create change on campus. From lobbying for contraceptives to be available on campus to increasing education around local anti-choice crisis pregnancy centers, our fellows see first-hand what it’s like to build power and progress with the support of NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia.
Our fellows graduate from the program with a holistic and hands-on learning experience, understanding the fundamentals of grassroots organizing, electoral and policy processes, and how to prepare for future careers in advocacy. Our fellows also receive a stipend to compensate them for their work.
Eligibility: The Student Advocacy Fellowship is open to undergraduate sophomores and juniors with a minimum 2.5 GPA enrolled at Virginia public or private university. Two fellowship positions are open at each university unless otherwise specified by NPCVA. Fellows commit to at least 8 hours of work outside of their trainings in the fall and spring semesters, and 4 hours over winter break. Fellows receive a stipend at the end of each semester.
Application Requirements: Applicants must submit an online application, resume, and unofficial transcript no later than July 23 2017 for consideration in the 2017 – 2018 cohort. Applications are considered on a rolling basis. Students can also be nominated online.
NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia is looking for passionate, driven students who are unapologetically pro-choice and proud. We want to recognize the next generation of leaders and provide them with the skills they need to succeed as changemakers. Our fellows have strong interpersonal skills, dream big, turn ideas into action, and share our commitment to the reproductive rights movement in Virginia.
