Virginia Facts and Figures

Posted: 12/02/2003

Here are some statistics on abortion and contraception in Virginia.

This information is taken from the Alan Guttmacher Institute's State Facts About Abortion and Contraception Counts pages.

  • In Virginia, 147,310 of the 1,580,350 women of childbearing age become pregnant each year. 63% of these pregnancies result in live births and 23% in abortions.

  • Virginia's teenage pregnancy rate ranks 26th nationally. Of the 19,040 teen pregnancies each year in Virginia, 52% result in live births and 34% result in abortions.

  • In 2000, 28,780 women obtained abortions in Virginia, producing a rate of 18.1 abortions per 1,000 women of reproductive age. (Some of these women were from other states, and some Virginia residents had abortions in other states, so this rate may not reflect the abortion rate of state residents.) The rate declined 5% since 1996, when it was 19.0 abortions per 1,000 women 15-44.

  • In 2000, there were 46 abortion providers in Virginia. This represents a 19% decrease from 1996, when there were 57 abortion providers.

  • In 2000, 84% of Virginia counties had no abortion provider. 47% of Virginia women lived in these counties. In the South census region, where Virginia is located, 32% of women having abortions traveled at least 50 miles, and 10% traveled more than 100 miles.

  • In Virginia, 841,080 women are in need of contraceptive services and supplies. Of these, 386,690 women--including 125,950 teenagers--are in need of publicly supported contraceptive services.

  • In Virginia, 10% of women aged 15-44 have incomes under the federal poverty level, and 17% do not have private health insurance or Medicaid.

  • Family planning clinics in Virginia serve 127,900 women, including 37,400 teenagers. 76% are served by health departments, 6% are served by hospitals, 11% are served by Planned Parenthood, 6% are served by community health centers and 1% are served by other types of agencies.

  • In Virginia, publicly funded family planning clinics help women avoid 29,800 unintended pregnancies each year.
