NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia PAC Endorses Mark Herring for Re-election as Attorney General
Alexandria, Va. – Today, NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia PAC, the political action arm of the Commonwealth’s leading pro-choice advocacy organization, announced its endorsement of Mark Herring for re-election as Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Herring faces a challenge from extreme anti-choice opponent John Adams.
"Attorney General Mark Herring is one of Virginia’s strongest champions for women’s reproductive health and freedom,” said Tarina Keene, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia PAC. "His leadership proved instrumental in pushing back Virginia’s dangerous and unconstitutional targeted regulations on abortion providers (TRAP). Not only has he fended off attacks on reproductive freedom here in the Commonwealth, but he’s championed women’s health all the way up to the Supreme Court. We’re so lucky to have Mark Herring fighting for Virginia women.”
"Women in Virginia need to know that they have an Attorney General who will stand with them and who will fight for their reproductive freedom," said Attorney General Herring. "I've been proud to work together with Governor McAuliffe to be a brick wall in defending a woman's right to choose here in Virginia. We can't afford to go backwards, and I'm looking forward to continuing this work in my next term."
Throughout his first term as Attorney General, Mark Herring has fought to defend a woman’s access to comprehensive health care services, including abortion and birth control. His leadership was key to reversing dangerous and medically unnecessary targeted regulations on abortion providers (TRAP) and providing a legal opinion that helped block an abortion ban in the legislature. He successfully fought alongside colleagues in the landmark Supreme Court case - Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt - which declared medically unnecessary requirements on abortion providers unconstitutional.
Meanwhile Herring’s opponent, John Adams, has made a career of pushing an extreme anti-choice agenda. Adams has questioned the very foundation of Roe v. Wade and makes no secret of his desire to ban abortion. Adams fought twice at the Supreme Court, including in the infamous Hobby Lobby case, to give employers the right to discriminate against their employees by denying basic, preventative health care coverage under the guise of religious liberty.
"John ‘Hobby Lobby’ Adams is just like Ken Cuccinelli,” said Keene. "He’ll use the office of Attorney General to attack women’s health care any chance he gets. The choice is clear for Virginia: a man who attacks a woman’s private medical decisions or Mark Herring, who defends it.”
NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia will use the full force of its grassroots organizing and fundraising power to re-elect Mark Herring as Virginia’s Attorney General.
See below for troubling excerpts from the platform of John Adams (emphasis added):
"I am unequivocally pro-life. By that I mean I will never waiver in my commitment to protect innocent life. I believe that all human life is precious, created equal, and deserving of legal protection, whether already — or yet to be — born.
The fact that abortion is now a constitutional right demonstrates the raw power of the Supreme Court. It also shows how important it is for Virginia to have an effective and principled lawyer to represent us before that Court. As your Attorney General, I will fight up to and at the Supreme Court to protect Virginians from further judicial overreach.
In Virginia, I will fight to uphold strict standards for abortion clinics and ensure that all laws passed by the General Assembly, including those that protect the unborn, are defended in court when they come under attack. I believe that we must promote a culture of life in Virginia. This starts with protecting the unborn and standing up for the defenseless and voiceless in society.”
"Virginia's Founding Fathers made us a beacon of religious freedom for the rest of the world. But our first freedom is under attack from activist judges and liberal bureaucrats who would leave people of faith defenseless against Washington and its accomplices in Richmond.
When the federal government tried to squelch the religious liberty of nuns and small business owners, I stood up for the freedoms of all Americans in the Supreme Court. I represented pro bono clients in Hobby Lobby and Little Sisters of the Poor, and I'll fight whenever our religious freedom is under attack.”
