Justin Fairfax Emerges as Clear Winner After First Forum in Race for Lieutenant Governor
Charlottesville, Va. – Today, Justin Fairfax distinguished himself from Jill Vogel on reproductive health and rights as the two faced off in the first forum of the lieutenant governor’s race. NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia praised Fairfax for trusting Virginia women to make their own personal medical decisions.
"While Jill Vogel attempted to rewrite her record on taking away a woman’s control over her own reproductive health and freedom, Justin Fairfax proved his deep understanding of the issues facing women and families in Virginia,” said Tarina Keene, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia. "Justin said it best: facts are not attacks. The facts are Jill Vogel thinks she knows what’s best for Virginia women and her legislative record proves it."
"Here’s a fact: Jill Vogel introduced the mandatory transvaginal ultrasound bill in the Virginia state Senate and today she doubled down on her support and her vote, saying she ‘stands by the principle’ of it. Another fact: women continue to be harmed every day in Virginia by the mandatory ultrasound law, which denies them their dignity and their reproductive freedom. The choice for Virginia’s next lieutenant governor is clear: women and families know we can trust Justin Fairfax.”
Jill Vogel has made no secret of her vehemently anti-choice record. In 2012, Vogel personally introduced the infamous mandatory transvaginal ultrasound bill. Five years later, women in Virginia must still undergo a medically-unnecessary mandatory ultrasound and wait 24 hours before accessing their constitutionally protected right to an abortion. Vogel also proposed targeted regulations on abortion providers (TRAP), designed with the intention of forcing clinics to close their doors. And Vogel cast almost two dozen votes against women’s reproductive health and abortion access during her time in the state Senate.
NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia will continue to use the full force of its grassroots organizing and fundraising power to educate Virginians and turn out voters to elect Justin Fairfax as lieutenant governor this November.
