NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia Expresses Deep Disappointment with Board of Health Vote on New Abortion Regulations

Vote could place women's health in jeopardy by limiting access to safe, legal abortion
Richmond, Va. - NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia executive director Tarina Keene issued the following statement regarding the Virginia Board of Health vote today to accept draft regulations on Virginia's women's health centers providing first-trimester abortion:

"Our worst fears have been validated today as the Board of Health voted to approve politically motivated rules that fail fully to protect women's health and safety. We are extremely disappointed that the Board would approve these regulations that could create significant burdens for Virginia women seeking first-trimester abortion care. We do applaud Board member James Edmondson, who stood up for women's health by offering many amendments to protect access, privacy and safety for Virginia women.

"NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia has been mobilizing our supporters throughout the state to speak out against these new regulations and we will continue to do so as the regulations move to the governor's office. These regulations, singling out women's health centers for burdensome and medically-unnecessary new requirements, remind us once again the importance of elections. NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia will be working in the next few months to hold anti-choice elected officials accountable by mobilizing voters to elect candidates to the state General Assembly who will not play politics with women's health.”
