Statement Regarding First House Bill Filed for the 2012 Virginia Legislative Session
H.B. 1 seeks to grant "personhood" rights to fertilized eggs, putting Virginia women's rights and health at risk
Tarina Keene, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia, issued the following statement in response to anti-choice legislators’ decision to file a so-called "personhood” bill. This legislation would outlaw abortion and could ban common forms of birth control. The bill introduction comes less two weeks after voters in Mississippi – a conservative red state – overwhelmingly rejected a ballot measure modeled after this far-reaching proposal. Delegate Robert Marshall filed House Bill 1 today, which is the beginning of the pre-filing period for the 2012 session.
"Here is another example of why elections have consequences,” Keene said. "Anti-choice politicians took control of the Virginia General Assembly and the first anti-choice bill they’re championing would ban abortion and threaten birth control. It could even have consequences for in vitro fertilization. We have no doubt that this is just the beginning of an all-out series of legislative attacks on women’s freedom and privacy."
"People didn’t see campaign literature or TV ads about advancing abortion bans, because voters were under the impression that creating jobs was the top priority. This agenda is out of touch with our commonwealth’s values and priorities—and we will fight it every step of the way.”
