NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia Slams Senate Health Care Bill
Alexandria, Va. – This morning, after weeks of secret negotiations behind closed doors, Senate Republicans released their plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. Tarina Keene, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia, issued the following statement.
"The cruelty of this ‘health care’ bill defies belief. This bill is a moral abomination that singles out women and the poor for particularly savage attacks by defunding women’s health centers, denying abortion coverage to women who get their insurance through the exchange or who receive tax subsidies, and making deep cuts to Medicaid.
The 22,000 Virginia women who rely on Planned Parenthood for their health needs would be hurt by this bill, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. With one in three births in Virginia covered by Medicaid, this bill seriously endangers pregnant women and their infants.
"I won’t mince words: this bill was crafted to line the pockets of millionaires through huge tax cuts while punishing women and families, anyone with pre-existing conditions, and struggling Americans. Any Senator who votes for this bill votes against their constituents.
"Virginians don’t want this bill, and we’re glad we can count on Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner to oppose it. But while Ralph Northam, Justin Fairfax, and Mark Herring have vocally condemned the bill as well, we’ve noticed that Ed Gillespie, Jill Vogel, and John Adams, who are all running to serve the Commonwealth in executive office, remain deafeningly silent about this travesty.”
