NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia Slams Gillespie for Campaigning with Vice President Pence in Southwest Virginia
Abingdon, Va. – This weekend, Virginia’s gubernatorial campaign took a drastic and desperate turn with Republican candidate for governor Ed Gillespie campaigning with anti-abortion extremist Vice President Mike Pence in Southwest Virginia. NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia condemns the Gillespie campaign’s choice to bring Pence to Virginia – a man who has demeaned and insulted women with his extreme record on women’s health and rights.
"We know Ed Gillespie wants to strip Virginia women of our right to access abortion,” said Tarina Keene, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia. "We know Vice President Pence is using his time in the White House to engineer the most blatant attack on reproductive freedom in a century. It’s no surprise these two would team up on the campaign trail – but it’s a huge disappointment to Virginia women and families who demand the right to control if and when we start a family.
"Even worse, these two anti-choice men are campaigning in Southwest Virginia – an area particularly hard hit by the far-right’s concerted effort to close clinics and impose burdensome, medically-unnecessary abortion restrictions on Virginia women,” Keene continued. "It’s a slap in the face. But we’re fighting back. We’re working hard to educate Virginians about Ed Gillespie’s extreme agenda and to turn out the vote for our reproductive rights champion, Dr. Ralph Northam.”
Vice President Pence makes no secret of his anti-abortion politics. During his tenure as governor of Indiana he signed an extreme anti-abortion bill that would require a woman to get an ultrasound 18 hours before her abortion, block abortion in cases of fetal anomaly, and require burial or cremation for miscarried or aborted fetuses. Pence also broke with precedent to speak at an anti-abortion rally earlier this year and promised that President Trump has "literally filled this White House” with anti-abortion officials to pursue a vigorous anti-reproductive freedom agenda.
NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia has mobilized the full power of its grassroots organizing and fundraising network to defeat Ed Gillespie and elect Dr. Ralph Northam, Justin Fairfax, and Mark Herring on November 7th.
